Why biocompatible dental materials are so important
Technological progress along with a modern lifestyle has brought us some significant health problems: Diseases of civilization are a growing burden on health care systems worldwide.
Taking personal responsibility for your health is a growing trend, because preventive care and a healthy lifestyle have proven effective against many ailments.
You are eating a well-balanced healthy diet to prevent intolerances - yet you are still suffering from:
- Allergies
- Back pain
- Concentration problems
- Chronic discomfort
Intolerances due to non-biocompatible materials in dental restorations as crowns, bridges or dentures might be the reason for your health problems.
We are permanently exposed to many environmental factors, which can trigger sensitivity reactions or allergies. Increasing scientific evidence shows that sensitivities to nickel, chromium, cobalt and some synthetic materials (monomers) have increased considerably within the last 20 years.
If you plan restoration of your teeth, you should consider any known sensitivities or allergies to materials used in dentistry. Get tested before having any dental work done.
We will gladly help you find a dentist specialising in integrative dentistry with biocompatible materials to avoid allergic reactions
Finding out, if you are allergic to dental materials - i.e. metals or components of metal alloys - is an important first step. Today, there is a variety of allergy tests available both in conventional medicine as well as complementary and alternative medicine. Talk to you doctor, which is best suited to your needs.
Metal allergy tests often involve saline solutions. Reactions to saline are quite common and may influence test results. Other tests might be needed to clarify the result.
The lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) is a scientifically validated laboratory test using a sample of your blood. It can detect hypersensitivity to metal on a cellular basis with T-lymphocytes (or memory lymphocytes). Positive test-reactions of memory lymphocytes to a specific metal means, that your immune system is sensitised to that metal.
Many patients react allergic to metals or synthetic materials used in dentistry
Metal ions are released form dental material and bind to body proteins. If you are sensitised to that specific metal, your immune system will start to attack them – this can result in allergic reactions. Most potent allergens in dental materials are nickel ions, followed by gold, silver, cobalt and mercury ions. In rare cases platinum as well a titanium ions have been identified as allergens.
Symptoms may include localised physical reactions, but also systemic disorders or both.
Localised reactions:
- Burning sensation of your tongue
- Jaw and tooth Pain
- Contact stomatitis
- Chewing problems
- Lichen planus (LP)
- Periodontitis
- Gingivitis
- Glossitis
Systemic disorders:
- Headache
- Migraine
- Neuropathies
- Muscle pain
- Arthralgia
- Fibromyalgia
- Paresthesia
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Sleeping disorders
- Depression
- Flue like symptoms
- Metal taste in your mouth (pathogalvanism)
Reactivation of chronic-inflammatory diseases
- Reactive arthritis
- Persistent infections
- Auto-immune disorders
- Type IV hypersensitivity reactions
Above symptoms might be sensitivity reactions to dental materials in your mouth like in fillings, bridges or dentures.
